We're trekking for Tony!

Back in 2016, our dear friend and colleague Tony Marshall suffered a fatal stroke. His memory continues to drive us on to bigger and tougher challenges to raise awareness of stroke symptoms, and support survivors.

With a brand new year in front of us, we're delighted to announce the launch of our flagship fundraising event for 2019. The F.A.S.T. Road to Rudridge is a 50km walking challenge that will test our endurance. On Saturday 22nd June we'll set out from Southwater to complete the 50km (31 mile) walk to Farnham, taking in the beautiful scenery of the Downs Link Path and the North Downs Way.

Staff, clients and suppliers have been invited to take part and preparations are underway to ensure the event is a huge success. Set over a single day, the route will incorporate five different stages so our fundraisers can choose a level that suits their ability but still pushes the limits:

  • 50km option - Southwater to Farnham
  • 40km option - Rudgwick to Farnham
  • 33km option - Cranleigh to Farnham
  • 22km option - Peasmarsh to Farnham
  • 13km option - Puttenham to Farnham

Those aiming to complete the full route face 10 hours of walking over footpaths, tracks and road, travelling through several Sussex and Surrey villages until crossing the finish line at our store in Farnham. The aim is to complete the course together as one big group.

The event is being meticulously planned by outdoor expedition company, Pied A Terre Adventures, whose professional guides will lead our teams along the route. Sporting sponsorship t-shirts and state-of-the-art GPS tracking systems, walkers' friends and families will be able to follow them every step of the way throughout the day.

Participants are being asked to pay an entrance fee of £50, and will be expected to secure their own sponsorship donations to help boost the grand total. Every penny raised will be given to the Stroke Association.

Some of our walkers have already started training in earnest, but for those who haven't faced a challenge of this scale before, guidance will be offered over the next few months on key aspects, from how to train and nutrition, to sponsorship and kit.

Supporting us every step of the way is Richard Betts, the Pied A Terre Course Director, who has 25 years' experience in leading expeditions and fundraising challenges, from treks to Mont Blanc to guiding Richard Branson across the Alps.

If you're looking to make a difference this year places are still available for colleagues and suppliers to join. To register your interest simply email: Kerrie.Betteridge@rudridge.co.uk

Good luck to our fundraising champions - we'll be following your preparations with great interest.

This year's campaign is named after the F.A.S.T. test to spot the early warning signs of a stroke:

  • FACE: Can the person smile? Has their face fallen on one side?
  • ARMS: Can the person raise both arms and keep them there?
  • SPEECH PROBLEMS: Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say? Is their speech slurred?
  • TIME: If you see any of these three signs call 999.
