Q&A with Sales Director Paul Duke

Our mantra 'trust us to deliver' relies on the dedication and professionalism of our staff. With years of service at Rudridge to his name, our newly appointed Sales Director Paul Duke has been instrumental in building this reputation. We asked Paul to answer a few questions about his work – and life outside the office.

How long have you worked at Rudridge?

I joined Rudridge one week before the company started trading on 25th April 2000. I was part of the original team, having been approached by Director Alan Betteridge to join the Farnham branch. At that time the branch was an underdeveloped site but within five years our facilities were redeveloped, and we've continued to go from strength to strength ever since.

What does your new role as Sales Director involve?

I will be looking after all the Branch Managers, Sales and Estimating Teams. I'll also deal with day to day operations across the Rudridge brand. My role involves looking after any form of selling and all the people associated with that, from external account managers, to yard supervisors and drivers.

Who is your typical Rudridge customer?

Rudridge doesn't have a typical customer as such, we deal with groundworkers with a turnover of £250 million to individual landscapers with a revenue of £50,000. The important thing is that every customer is treated the same. Regardless of size, everyone gets the same personal touch and professional, friendly response. Developing these relationships is key - getting the right people, doing the right things at the right time.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

This is very much a people business and dealing with clients and staff is one of the biggest rewards. Taking on the position of Sales Director is a whole new challenge for me and one I'm keen to undertake. My aim is to develop and enhance the way we do things.

Will your appointment mean a change in strategic direction?

We will continue to build on our trusted reputation in the market but for me it's about going back to basics and building those personal relationships with customers by picking up the phone and talking. Far too much is done by email today and yet sometimes five minutes on the phone can save 20 emails back and forth. We'll also be looking to develop our product lines including some niche areas.

What are the benefits of working at Rudridge?

I started as Sales Manager then moved to General Manager at the Farnham branch before taking on my new position as group Sales Director. With Rudridge you can go places, there's a great deal of opportunity for internal promotion within the business and wider group.

How did you get into this industry?

I joined straight from school as part of a training scheme very much like our current apprenticeships, so I appreciate the grounding this has given me. I gained a taster of each section of the business while developing my skills and enthusiasm with customers.

What are your interests outside of work?

This weekend was spent walking the dog, going for a four-hour cycle ride, doing a bit of work, meeting up with family and friends, and a round of golf! I enjoy being active and am a keen cyclist both road and mountain. I'm also a qualified Rescue Scuba Diver, currently training to become a Master Diver which I'll probably complete out in Malta as I only have five more dives to go. My first ever dive was in the Red Sea and it was like a Disney movie. I've since clocked up over 50 plus dives.

What does the future hold for Rudridge?

In the future we're looking to expand sites, bring in more product lines, and continue to build those personal connections. Customer focus will always remain at the heart of everything we do.

What does it take to run a successful branch and company?

Communication, drive and the will to succeed. It also takes teamwork and the ability to be able to build a rapport with the people around you.
