Q&A with our Brentford Branch Manager David Rudd

Over the last couple of months, we've been busy celebrating a number of promotions within the company and welcoming a few new faces to roles across our four branches. At the helm of our Brentford branch, Dave Rudd joined us four months ago from our sister company Keyline, having built up a successful career over the last 10 years in the civils and drainage sector. We caught up with Dave to find out how he's settling into the new position and to talk about climbing the career ladder.

What is it like working for us in Brentford?

Prior to joining the company, I was the Branch Manager at Keyline in Norwich for five years, so there are a number of similarities between the roles. However, the new position has afforded me opportunities to make the job my own and drive the strategic direction of the branch.

Who is your typical Rudridge customer?

Our core customers here at Brentford are civil engineers and large-scale construction companies. Being London-based, the main projects we supply materials for are tower blocks and this brings its own set of challenges as a Branch Manager. Most of our customers' sites have limited space to store stock which means most of the goods are ordered for use within a 24 or 48-hour timeframe. This means we have to be extremely responsive to our customers' requirements. Our next day delivery service is central to our offering.

What are the core aspects of your role?

Due to the challenges faced by construction companies working in London, we have to be mindful of the issues and adaptable to change. Fulfilling orders very quickly is key, but also being able to change at short notice is vital to delivering a first-class service. Our customers have learned to trust that we'll deliver what they need, when they need it. And if their timescales shift – we can adapt our delivery schedule to meet these demands. We maintain a large amount of heavy-side building materials on the ground at all times to ensure our response rates never fail.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Day to day, the job certainly keeps you on the go and anything can happen which I enjoy. I also appreciate the career opportunities that I've been given in this industry, so it's nice to be able to do the same for others. I'm keen to encourage staff to develop wherever possible: if you show the right attitude then the chance to train for a senior role is there.

How did you get into this industry?

When I was younger, I did a few different jobs but nothing seemed to fit until I took a position, via the job centre, at UGS. After six years of building my career within the company as a young manager, I eventually took control of all operations at the branch.

What are your objectives at Brentford?

Continuing to drive sales and develop our operational processes are important areas I'm currently addressing, to ensure we are the best we can be. For me, enhancing customer relationships is central to the success of the branch. People understand we're a specialist company with a reputation for excellence which means we are constantly working on our response times, order processing and general customer service levels.

What are your interests outside of work?

Having moved to London for the role, I'm enjoying socialising with friends and family. I'm also a fan of live music across all genres so in the summer you'll probably find me at a festival most weekends.

What does it take to be a successful Branch Manager?

You've got to be fair, honest and hard working. Giving your staff the right training and support to do their jobs creates trust and also motivates them to do well, which in turn benefits your customers. It's been a privilege to work with the team and get to know our clients over the last few months.
