Our 'Stay Safe' culture

According to the Health and Safety Executive, UK workplaces are safer than ever before. However, recent statistics still make for uncomfortable reading; it is estimated that one fatality at work occurs every 2.5 days. The most common accidents involve working at height and moving machinery.

Protecting our people

The construction industry, alongside manufacturing and agriculture, is recognised as one of the most high-risk sectors. The significance of this is never underestimated here at Rudridge, particularly as our business involves welcoming customers into our yards. We take this responsibility to our employees and clients very seriously.

On a daily basis, our job involves handling heavy goods, operating machinery, and working around vehicles, all of which present hazards. Our ability to implement the latest health and safety procedures is essential to the wellbeing of everyone around us. However, we aim to be more than simply compliant.

We believe health and safety is a culture that should be encouraged and implemented throughout the whole organisation. More importantly, we've been busy turning plans into action.

Setting the standard

Leading by example, our Gravesend branch was awarded the top score of 8 during a recent Stay Safe Review of its health and safety processes on the shop floor and in the yard.

Our Sales Director, Paul Duke, commented:

"Congratulations go to the whole team at Gravesend on this fantastic result.

There is a clear culture of continual improvement throughout the entire team at Gravesend, and in every branch, from our drivers to the managers, office staff, and yard colleagues. We recognise that our safety journey is never finished and we will continue to strive to make improvements.

"The key to success lies in the fact that management lead by example, and colleagues are committed to looking after each other. A set of safety expectations was rolled out in Gravesend and everyone put their personal pledge on post-it notes alongside."

When you look at the developments at Gravesend it's easy to see why it received top marks. Here, we look at some of the measures that keep our colleagues and visitors safe. These have been specifically designed to mitigate the danger around the most common causes of accidents:

  1. Working around manoeuvring vehicles poses one of the biggest threats. Our segregated customer parkingbarrier and signage means that everyone has to report to the office before entering the yard. This way, we can control who is on site and monitor movements.
  2. All staff and visitors are supplied with mandatory safety gear including high-vis vests and steel toe-caps for on-site protection.
  3. The flow of traffic through the yard is controlled by a one-way system, alleviating the need for lorries to reverse or turn.
  4. On-site hydrologic grab systems have reduced the amount of manual labour and heavy lifting required to shift stock, which is another common cause of work-related injuries.
  5. Lorries are loaded and unloaded within a designated loading area, using fully extendable forklifts so staff don't need to climb onto the lorry beds. The contents are securely strapped down to the vehicle to ensure safety during transportation.

To see our safety policy in action, take a look at the interview with Paul Duke and Tony Cottee on Rudridge TV. Through the latest technology, training, management techniques and reporting, we're hoping to lead best practice, so that safety remains firmly front and centre of everything we do.
