A year of supporting worthy causes

Here at Rudridge we pride ourselves on the fact that people are at the heart of our business. Whether it's staff, customers or suppliers, we've built up a network of connections that enrich the job we do. So, wherever possible we try to support the many good causes that our colleagues are involved in, and this year has been a bumper one for fundraising.

As we approach the holiday season and the start of the New Year, we've been looking back on all the amazing fundraising challenges and campaigns that we've been privileged to bolster and promote. From gruelling bike rides and punishing marathons, to our annual fundraising quiz; the endeavours of our staff, customers and suppliers are impressive.

In October, we held our annual fundraising quiz at the Silvermere Golf Club in Cobham, Surrey. Teams of businesses from across the South East competed to win the £1,000 prize fund for a charity of their choice. The Pretenders, from Hampshire-based business Moseley Green Services, were crowned the evening's masterminds and donated the money to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Paul Duke and Peter Burrell, two Rudridge employees from our Farnham branch, raised an enormous £3,335 for the Stroke Association by cycling over 320 miles from Paris to Geneva in September. This impressive feat of endurance was done in memory of our former colleague Tony Marshall. Paul and Peter felt it was important to mark his memory with a challenge that would push their limits, and as a result smashed their original fundraising target.

Back in April, we were delighted to see work start on The Westfield Lane Stadium, which will create a permanent new home for Badshot Lea Football Club, winners of our Community Project initiative. This scheme will benefit from donations of material and expert advice from us, resulting in a full refurbishment of the clubhouse, seating, pitches and car park. We look forward to seeing the finished result next year.

We've also donated funds to a number of worthy causes close to our heart throughout the year. A team from Brett Landscaping, one of our suppliers, undertook the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for their colleague James Mackey. James was admitted to hospital with sepsis which resulted in a double leg amputation. The fund will go towards helping him to rebuild his life following this devastating disease.

The Managing Director of long-standing customer AD Bly Construction, Aaron McSkimming, ran the Virgin London Marathon to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Research Centre. Aaron was running in memory of his father and we were delighted to sponsor this epic task.

This Christmas we're continuing our support for The Chailey Heritage Foundation in East Sussex by giving £500 to their D.R.E.A.M. Centre appeal. The charity, which supports children and young people with complex disabilities and health needs, is fundraising to build an indoor activity centre.

As we head into the season of goodwill, we want to wish all our staff, customers and suppliers a very Merry Christmas. But, instead of sending Christmas cards we will be donating to the Lighthouse Club, a charity that provides financial and emotional support to the construction community and their families who have suffered long-term illness or injury. In place of a card, our best wishes will be sent in an email alongside a little treat - a Strongman inspired truck pull game to celebrate our association with the UK's Strongest Man competition.

Thank you to everyone who has given their time, sweat and money to all these worthy causes.

Wishing you all a peaceful festive season and a prosperous 2018.
