Farnham pair using pedal power to raise money in memory of colleague

Paul Duke and Peter Burrell from our Farnham branch are gearing up for the challenge of a lifetime by cycling from Paris to Geneva to raise cash in memory of a much-missed colleague.

Their route, which covers over 320 miles, will include hairpin bends and punishing climbs, including the 1,323m Col de la Faucille ascent which has regularly featured in the Tour de France.  The five-day ride will take in Paris, Sens, Semur-en Auxois, Dijon and Lons-le-Saunier, before finishing in Geneva where they hope to celebrate with a much-deserved pint by the lake.

The pair are taking on September's challenge to raise money for the Stroke Association and in memory of Tony Marshall, who died suddenly after a short illness last year. Tony was a Senior Sales Executive and had been a popular member of the Rudridge family for 14 years.

Although Paul and Peter are both keen cyclists, the ride is taking them out of their comfort zone.  To prepare for the gruelling journey, the duo are following a strict training and diet schedule, which includes getting comfortable in their saddles by covering between 500km and 600km every month. These training rides take them across lumpy terrain and include long climbs in the Surrey Hills to try and emulate the landscape of the Alps.

Additionally, to ensure they are ready for the off, Paul and Peter are also completing the RideLondon event in July – a 100 mile cycle around London and Surrey – as well as other long-distance cycling events.

The Stroke Association is the UK's leading stroke charity working to fund cutting-edge treatments and change the lives of all those affected.  Fundraising done by people like Paul and Peter helps the charity continue its life-changing research and fight for better care.  Thanks to its hard work with campaigns such as FAST there is a greater awareness of the symptoms, and the treatment of stroke patients has dramatically improved.

Paul and Peter are hoping to raise £1,200 for the charity, in addition to the £375 already donated by Rudridge in June. Click here to show your support and make a donation.  Visit the Stroke Association's website for more information about its work.
