One of the great things about pursuing a career in the construction industry is that the positions available are wide and varied. It's also one of the UK's fastest growing industries so job security can be higher than other sectors.  Below we take a look at some of the ways you can enter the industry, whether that's by learning a trade, working for a merchant or making a career change.

Apprenticeships

Due to the hands-on nature of the industry, apprenticeships were always the traditional route into construction and, thanks to recent government initiatives, they are enjoying a popularity surge again.   Generally popular with school or college leavers, they enable the apprentice to get paid while learning on the job and working towards a NVQ qualification.

There are over 100 different apprenticeships in construction ranging from brick-laying, plastering and flooring, to more technical jobs such as civil engineering, planning and energy management. An apprenticeship at a builders merchant will be slightly different as it will involve working across all aspects of the business, from serving customers at a trade counter to working in the yard.

College courses

Studying a trade at a further education college offers an alternative to an apprenticeship.  Courses tend to be available not only for most trades, but also for construction management and maintenance operations.

This route gives a good grounding and enables those that want to progress to Higher Education to pursue careers as civil engineers, surveyors or site managers the chance to gain the right entry qualifications.

Making a career change

In view of the diverse nature of the construction industry, a wide range of experience gained outside the sector is transferable making the sector a perfect consideration if you're looking for a career change.  Project management experience, IT knowledge, accountancy skills, good customers service and experience of a job where health and safety was paramount are all skills that employers will take note of, whether that's working on a construction site or for a merchant.

Construction is also a popular route for those that have been in the armed forces as many ex-service personnel will have completed apprenticeships that will be extremely valuable to the sector.
